Wood Preservation by Copper Care!

Much of the world's electrical distribution system is suspended on wood poles. Copper Care's product line of wood preservatives are tailored to fit the needs of both the applicator and the pole. Specialized internal treatments are designed to control decay and insects in refractory heartwoods and vulnerable sapwood. Cu-Bor's excellent penetration properties transport Boron and copper from the surface deep into the outer shell. Cu-Lam Barrier Wrap serves as a preservative containment. Cu-Lam keeps pressure treatments in the wood and out of the soil, extending preservative service life. The copper laminate system has excellent galvanic durability in ground contact is an effective barrier against subterranean termites.

Copper Naphthenates

Copper Naphthenate is an oil-borne wood preservative classified as general use by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Copper Care Wood Preservative’s Tenino, and Cu-Nap concentrate products are EPA-registered “general use” preservatives and have been standardized for use by the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA). Creosote and pentachlorophenol are used in pressure treatment for utility poles, bridge timbers and railroad crossties. Copper naphthenate is the only non-restricted use product in this market. Copper naphthenate has a low mammalian toxicity profile.

Cu-Bor

Cu-Bor is a Copper/Boron wood preservative, used to treat the groundline area of standing wood structures such as utility poles. The highly effective active ingredients in Cu-Bor travel deep into the wood by diffusion (osmotic action). Cu-Bor's labeled uses include:

  • Brush-on
  • Spray
  • Dip/Diffusion
  • Pressure Treating
Cu-Bor is also a furnish treatment in engineered wood products and a railroad tie treatment. Cu-Bor is available in bulk and ready-to-use packaging.

Super-Fume

Fumigants are designed to help protect in-service utility poles against strength loss caused by internal decay and insect attack. They produce vapors that move within the pole both vertically and horizontally from the application holes, helping to eliminate wood-destroying fungi. They are ideal for protecting heartwood and inner regions of poles. Fumigant applications can help control incipient decay and help to prevent future fungal attack. They can be especially helpful when treating Western species (fir and cedar). Western species are prone to internal decay because they are largely heartwood which is difficult to penetrate and treat. Fumigants are applied into holes drilled in the pole. After application, the fumigants begin to volatize and migrate through the solid wood several feet from the point of application.

Cu-Lam Barriers

Cu-Lam barrier wrap is a copper foil polyethylene laminate which prevents direct soil contact with the pole. The Cu-Lam barrier keeps the preservative from migrating into the surrounding soil. Barrier wraps offer additional protection to treated wood from decay, insect attack, and preservative strength loss over time. The preservative stays in the wood longer, by inhibiting the natural depletion process of the preservatives. Cu-Lam barriers are designed to deter and repel wood-destroying fungi and termites. Install Cu-Lam barriers in environmentally sensitive areas and in regions where subterranean termites are active.
